Description :
STUNNING ANTIQUE BALUCH TRIBAL PRAYER RUG, Khorasan Province, Torbat-e-Haidari region, Djan Beki Tribe, late 19th century to circa 1900, and coming in most excellent overall original condition for the collector. The size is: 3'-2" x 5'-11" (96 x 178 cm). Asymmetrically knotted open to the left on natural ivory wool warps and natural dark brown wool wefts. A jewell of a Baluch tribal rug with a splendid design and made from the best wool quality and 100% natural dyes. The field displays a lovely design of boteh elements on a natural camel hair ground. The corner spandrals show hands symbolizing the "pandj-tan", the five most historically important Islamic religious figures: Mohammed, Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hossain. The condition of this fine weaving is most excellent with allover high pile (see photo # 10). Both the top and bottom endings are original and complete with remnants of the original kilim finishes at both ends. The side cord over-castings are comprised of goat-hair and they are original and mostly complete with some abraded areas of the goat-hair wrapping. This lovely antique Baluch weaving is clean and collection ready. It will make a stunning display as a wall hanging in any home or office decorative environment. Note that a sleeve has been sewn to the reverse at the top by the previous owner (see photo # 11) to
facilitate the hanging of the rug as an antique Oriental tribal rug wall art textile. A similarly designed, albeit earlier, specimen from this particular Baluch tribal affiliation was published by Siawosch Azadi in "Carpets in the Baluch Tradition", 1986, as plate 19, pages 124-125. If you have any questions about this beautiful antique Djan Beki Baluch prayer rug, feel free to call Michael Phillips at or email me = READ phillipsrugs at comcast dot net.
